Twin Commander Desktop Models
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:35:19 pm »
Back in the old days (at least for the Jetprops), when you ordered a new Commander, they also gave you a desktop model of your airplane. Most of these models didn't survive too long-- they were fairly delicate, after all. Who knows where most of them ended up...

Anyway, this is the model they gave to my dad when he bought his 1000. My brother has had it for probably 25 years or more, and now it's in my hangar... I have no idea where the actual airplane ended up-- it left US registry when we sold it, and has never reappeared.

Barry Collman from UK can probably tell you. Tracking Commanders is his hobby.  I believe he is on the group, know he belongs to TCFG.

Maybe, but I'd be surprised. Rumor was it was confiscated or damaged or something in a drug running operation, and left to rot somewhere in South America. A decent number of Commanders met a similar fate, although some of them have since made their way back into service.

DonV, you and I spoke about this awhile back.  Original ones from the factory were amazing because they were dimensionally accurate.  I've tried to buy a few online as suggested above and they don't look great    Sadly as you mentioned, being two young boys in the 80's was hard to keep our hands on the original and eventually we broke the model.
Would pay good money to find an identical replacement for the old man.

I think this one is the real deal, though. I agree that the modern ones are just wrong, but I'm fairly confident that this one might be a real one.

I just bought it. We'll see what it looks like. I do have an original (1000) to compare it to.

The 690 model showed up yesterday. It's great! It is definitely the real deal, and is dimensionally the same (except for the wingspan) as my 1000 model.
