« on: April 10, 2016, 03:25:15 am »
My maintenance company have lost my genuine rudder lock. When I asked our Commander company here in Australia they said twin commander weren't doing them anymore

Anyone have any idea where I an get one

I would never have a rudder lock on an airplane! Watch this.

Commanders need a rudder lock. The rudder isn't attached to the nose steering, and so has no damping on the ground. It will just flap back and forth, and even a fairly light wind can damage it.

Furthermore, taking off with the rudder lock in shouldn't result in something like you see in that video unless an engine fails, or something like that. At least not in a Commander...

G'day John,

You should try Ohio based - Commander Aero (www.commander-aero.com).

Go to 'Parts' and download their latest guide - gust locks on P17.

They are of good quality.

Cheers

donv - an old pal would always hang one of those plastic/rubber geese on a bungee attached to the off-set handle of the gust lock - on take-off the goose would provide the necessary drag to 'pull' the gust-lock out backwards...

Not to mention there is a thing called a preflight we should all be doing.  :-). And control check before takeoff?

Absolutely!

I check the rudders before engine start... because, long ago, I managed to get the right engine running before I realized that I left the lock in. That was embarrassing, to have to shut down, get out, and get the lock.

The last thing you should do before getting into the airplane to leave is remove the rudder lock.
